The Horn of Africa Wildlife Program (HAWP) is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on protecting the exceptional biodiversity of the Horn of Africa.
There are 36 biodiversity hotspots recognized worldwide, representing areas with high biodiversity. The Horn of Africa including the bushlands of northeastern Kenya is one of only two that is entirely arid with over 2,700 endemic plants and animals and with more reptiles than anywhere in Africa.
Regrettably, only 5% of the original habitat remains with overgrazing, climate change, invasive species and armed conflict thought to drive these losses.
NATURAL HERITAGE
Our Program prioritizes species-specific conservation, with special focus on endemic and endangered species. Our initiatives range from population monitoring and research to habitat restoration and counter-trafficking efforts. By targeting these species, HAWP aims to protect vital ecosystems and contribute to broader ecological health.
